About This Project

MATERIAIS 2023 aims at continuing the successful series of MATERIAIS congresses promoted by the Portuguese Materials Society (SPM) initiated in 1983. This edition, the XXI Congresso da Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais – MATERIAIS 2023, and the XII International Materials Symposium, will take place in GuimarãesPortugal, from 3 to 6 April 2023.

MATERIAIS congresses are one of the most effective and important discussion fora on Materials Science and Engineering in Portugal. MATERIAIS 2023 aims at discussing the most recent scientific and technological advances in Materials Science and Engineering within the general agenda of contributing to Sustainability for a Future.

To rebuild coral communities, the development of substrates and artificial reefs has been an effective restoration method to settle vulnerable coral larvae or to outplant settled juveniles back to natural andartificial reefs. This article reveals the potential of different materials for coral recruitment substrates, that are obtained from mineral and organic waste, with the aim of promoting the circular economy. Four mortars were developed composed of mussel shells, limestone, dolomitic sand, and fossil coral skeleton.Additive Manufacturing and silicone molds were used to develop 3D substrates samples with the designed morphology. This research aims to study how the physical and chemical properties of the substrates may affect coral water conditions (environment surrounding), coral larval recruitment, transplantation and the growth rate process.
